Artist Statement:
I aim to capture the brevity and essence of the subject, to stop the world and create a moment in time. My paintings take me outdoors for spontaneous impressions of the landscape. Studio work brings creativity and refinement. My palette is ever changing, combining traditional and modern techniques to bring a special vision where I live and understanding of our earth through art.
Critique:
Gary Ackerman's style might be best described as "expressionistic"; combining impressionist and abstractionist technique with his own unique synthesis of creative energies. A master of color, form and texture, his work commands a national and international audience. It is common to find him abroad studying, seeking and looking for that one moment in time that will capture his attention and inspire greatness on canvas. However, we also enjoy his beautiful Hawaiian paintings, his ability to capture the most intimate and dramatic moods of the Islands leaving us with a feeling of warmth and aloha. At home on the Big Island of Hawaii he continues to amaze the art community. With an endless amountof energy and persistence toward quality and perfection, it is no wonder that Gary Ackerman is one of the few artists today that can fill an entire gallery with his own work and still hold the viewer's interest. Gary is considered to be a leading landscape and still-life artist on Hawaii today. His Modern Impressionistic, free liquid style, varied techniques and textural two and three-dimensional surfaces along with a strong sense of form have won him international acclaim. His diversity is masterful and skilled, a true alchemist his colors are radiantly powerful and his composition and form are most convincing.
